Exams and Cleanings
A dental cleaning is a professional cleaning you receive from a dentist or dental hygienist. Most dental cleanings take only 25 to 30 minutes. Cleanings should be performed every six months to prevent excessive plaque buildup. Plaque left untreated can lead to unhealthy gums and tooth decay. Your routine dental cleaning will include:
Examination of diagnostic x-rays — X-rays help us detect decay, tumors, cysts and bone loss, as well as allow us to get a good view of your teeth and their roots.
Oral cancer screening — Your oral cancer screening will involve a review of the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues and gums for signs of oral cancer.
Gum disease evaluation — We will check your gums and bones for signs of periodontal disease.
Examination of tooth decay — With dental instruments, we will closely examine the surface of each tooth for signs of decay.
Examination of existing restorations — If you have any current fillings crowns, etc. we will check to make sure they are in good shape and functioning properly.
Your dental cleaning will involve the removing of plaque and tartar from all tooth surfaces. Polishing completes the cleaning, making the surface of the teeth smooth and minimizing future plaque build-up.
